The eternal curse of the queered rockstar romance - will Scorpio Season fall prey to the same tired tropes, or will it shatter the mold with its unapologetic portrayal of Florence Gibson and Luca Walsh’s tumultuous relationship? The official synopsis teases a tantalizing premise, but leaves much to be desired in terms of actual plot progression. And yet, that’s what makes this book so intriguing - the lacuna of information only serves to heighten our expectations, like the aching silence between two would-be lovers.

One can’t help but think of the likes of Rainbow Rowell and Taylor Jenkins Reid, who have both mastered the art of crafting relatable, flawed protagonists. Will Maisie Bell follow suit, imbuing Florence and Luca with the same depth and nuance that has come to define the New Adult genre? The fact that the band’s success hinges on their ability to keep their past tryst a secret raises all sorts of questions about the performative nature of identity, and the blurred lines between reality and artifice. Can Scorpio Season successfully navigate these complexities, or will it devolve into a clichéd exploration of “forbidden love”?

And then, of course, there’s the setting - the cramped, sweaty confines of a rock tour bus, where the boundaries between bandmates are constantly being tested. It’s a powder keg of emotions, just waiting to be ignited by the spark of Florence and Luca’s unresolved tension. But will Bell be able to sustain this tension over the course of the book, or will it fizzle out like a damp squib? Only time will tell.

One thing’s for certain, though - Scorpio Season is going to be a wild ride, full of all the angst and drama that we’ve come to expect from the rockstar romance genre. Whether it’ll be a worthwhile journey remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure - I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.

The queer representation in Scorpio Season is, of course, a major selling point - but will it be more than just a tokenistic gesture, a checkbox on the diversity quota? Can Bell truly capture the essence of queer identity, or will it feel like a shallow attempt to appease the zeitgeist? The fact that Florence and Luca’s relationship is already fraught with tension and secrecy raises all sorts of red flags - will their love be able to survive the scrutiny of the public eye, or will it be torn asunder by the pressures of fame?

Literally.

The more I think about Scorpio Season, the more I’m convinced that it’s going to be a game-changer - or, at the very least, a fascinating case study in the perils of queer representation. Whether it’ll be a triumphant success or a catastrophic failure remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure - I’ll be reading it with bated breath.

Ugh, and now my favorite fountain pen has leaked all over my only clean shirt. #queerrepresentationmatters #newadultfiction #rockstarrromance
