Animals of the French Species (Lina Connerly, #2) Book Review and Summary
Author: Michelle RichmondPage Count: UnknownPublication Date: Expected publication 2026 APL Sometimes you just need to stare at a completely different country for three hundred pages while your own laundry mocks you from the corner of the bedroom. Michelle Richmond is tossing us right back into the fray with Animals of the French Species, and frankly, I am ready to pack my bags. We are following Lina Connerly from the damp, bureaucratic trenches of the FBI straight into the intoxicating, overpriced haze of Paris. Oh, to be an expat dodging international fugitives instead of wondering if my nine-year-old actually ate a vegetable today. My brain is actively melting. Let us talk about the absolute exhaustion of carrying a dead spouse around like an extra piece of heavy luggage. Grief is not a polite little floral arrangement on a mantelpiece; it is an uninvited houseguest who tracks mud on the white rugs. Richmond understands this visceral ache. Or at least, she did in the first book. But honestly, why must every female protagonist in a thriller be mourning someone? Can she not just wake up and choose violence because she is bored of bureaucracy? Give us a spy who is simply irritable. Yet here we are. A dead husband, a teenager in tow, and a rogue intelligence officer named Calvin Cook leaking secrets like a faulty radiator. And what on earth is happening with the children in modern fiction? Every time I open a novel featuring a teenager—whether it is The Silent Patient or whatever overly hyped suburban drama is currently clogging the front table at Barnes & Noble—I am forced to endure pages of brooding dialogue about high school transitions. Rory gets a new school and some crêpes, great. Meanwhile, mother dearest is hunting a traitor and dodging a cold case called the Train Fantôme. Twenty years of dead bodies in a Métro car. Now that is my kind of Tuesday. The Aesthetics of Paranoia Paris is usually sold to us as a pastel dreamscape of macarons and accordions. Not here. Richmond strips away the gloss. She uses the labyrinthine bowels of the embassy and shadowy city tunnels to mirror Lina’s fractured psyche. Every shadow holds a leaked identity. Every pastry chef might be an informant. It is suffocating, brilliant paranoia. The plot mechanics outlined in this synopsis are deliciously convoluted. Assets turning up dead. Headquarters paralyzed by internal politics—because of course the higher-ups are utterly useless when actual stakes are involved, much like the school board committee handling the middle school fundraiser debacle. A looming world leaders' summit. A ticking clock. It borrows heavily from the classic spy playbook of Olen Steinhauer and early le Carré, but filtered through the frantic lens of single motherhood. I demand absolute perfection from this release. Do not squander the Métro mystery, Richmond. If the Train Fantôme turns out to be a boring gas leak, I am throwing the hardcover directly into the recycling bin. The youngest has just discovered the permanent markers.
