Cherry a novel
Author: Rose WildingPage Count: UnknownPublication Date: Expected publication 2026-11-03 APL The PR machinery for Rose Wilding’s Cherry arrives with all the subtlety of a Diana Dors exhibition at a parish hall. A late nineties setting, three women trapped in domestic purgatory, and a looming corpse. Groundbreaking. We are apparently meant to tremble at the prospect of suburban claustrophobia mixed with past-due pop stardom. The Anatomy of Manufactured Dread Gifty wanders streets looking for ghosts. Isobel launders her former fame by scrubbing countertops. Ally suffers the double indignity of an absentee spouse and an autoimmune flare-up while a disgraced singer invades her kitchen. Yet the synopsis reads less like a thriller and more like the casting couch for a straight-to-streaming adaptation of Sunset Boulevard directed by someone who only understands the nineties through Clueless mood boards. The Exhaustion of the Domestic Cage Wilding clearly wants to mine the fertile ground of female resentment. But let us be entirely serious here. The nineties nostalgia circuit has officially surpassed Y2K panic in its sheer, unadulterated laziness. And what are we offered? A dead wife in a cordoned-off bedroom. A fallen pop idol wearing the hair shirt of domestic servitude. A husband fleeing to Indonesia—truly, the international capital of literary men escaping their responsibilities—while leaving his ailing wife to the mercy of a stranger. It is the plot of a Richard Curtis film scripted by a committee of bitter divorcées in Notting Hill. The Inevitable Body Count Someone is going to die. Of course they are. Because no modern publisher knows how to write female interiority without a convenient homicide to spice up the brunch conversation. We are fed this tired trope of women pushed to the edge by the sheer banality of men and memory. It feels like the Konnersreuth Fast of psychological suspense—all spectacle, zero actual nourishment. Wilding may pull off a clever structural trick with the timeline, or she may deliver a damp squib that relies entirely on the scent of cheap hairspray and dial-up internet references to distract from the hollow mechanics. My money is on the latter. Keys in the ignition. The engine needs to clear its throat anyway.
