Our dark incantation
Author: Wanda HellmundPage Count: UnknownPublication Date: Expected publication 2026-10-20 APL As I ponder the upcoming release of Our Dark Incantations, the latest offering from Wanda Hellmund, I find myself oscillating between fascination and apprehension. This dark academia fantasy appears to be a labyrinthine exploration of the complexities that arise when two damaged individuals must coalesce in order to vanquish a shared adversary. And yet, I'm reminded of the likes of The Poppy War, in which a young warrior's journey toward healing is forged through perilous partnership with an equally scarred but captivatingly charismatic companion. The concept of a damaged ex-healer, Mira Winters, being thrust into an unexpected union with a deadly Wielder, Aidric Dawson, sends pangs of recognition through my romantic heart. These types of partnerships have proven so captivating in other works – The Bear and the Nightingale, for example, where two isolated souls find a tentative bond amidst ancient, mystical powers – and I suspect that Hellmund will similarly breathe life into these two unlikely allies. The friction between their disparate backgrounds and temperaments will undoubtedly provide a palpable spark, don't you think? Mira, having sworn off magic following the war, is now begrudgingly enrolled in Ivercrest University's demonology course, and finds herself paired with none other than Aidric, a man rumored to possess both aristocratic demeanor and a deadly legacy. And it is this union that will propel them into a sinister mystery lurking within the shadows of magical society, threatening the fragile peace forged after the war's devastating conclusion. One can't help but feel an eerie sense of foreboding as these two characters – bound by necessity, and perhaps something more – embark upon this perilous journey together. I must confess, too, that I find myself drawn to the parallels between Our Dark Incantations and other works that explore the complexities of forbidden love and uneasy alliances, such as The City of Brass, which juxtaposes an ailing healer with a cunning thief in a magical world fraught with danger. These narratives often find themselves grappling with the existential questions of what constitutes loyalty, how we define healing, and whether true partnership can ever be forged when both parties carry such profound emotional scars. One cannot, however, help but feel a hint of vagueness when it comes to the specifics of the plot, and it remains to be seen how Hellmund will reconcile the multiple disparate threads of world-building, romance, and mystery within the pages of Our Dark Incantations. I do hope that the novel will offer a satisfying convergence of these elements, lest we be left with a narrative that feels somewhat disjointed. Still, even with some reservations, I remain cautiously optimistic about the potential for genuine growth and romance within Our Dark Incantations. And so, I shall eagerly await the release of this novel, hoping to see Hellmund succeed in crafting a narrative that skillfully navigates the darker corners of the human experience – where even the most unlikely pairings can give rise to something beautiful. Now, really, I must go change that burnt-out lightbulb – the one in the attic hasn't been replaced in months. #DarkAcademiaRomance #FantasyFiction #NewRelease
