Tell me what you see

Author: Samantha Jayne AllenPage Count: UnknownPublication Date: Expected publication 2026 APL Another manuscript lands on the mahogany desk, and quite frankly, the collective mediocrity of contemporary suspense writing is making my eye twitch. Let us examine Samantha Jayne Allen’s upcoming Tell Me What You See, a title that sounds suspiciously like every third procedural churned out by a tired ghostwriter in Los Angeles. The Geography of Despair We are dragged—yet again—to a dusty California hamlet, this time Tehachapi. Cheyenne Mitchell runs her late mother's New Age boutique in a strip mall, a setting that reeks of half-baked existential dread and cheap incense. Her mother was a television psychic. The plot kicks off because two women went missing decades apart, and our pragmatic, agnostic protagonist suddenly realizes she has to dig up the past. Groundbreaking stuff. Truly, nobody has ever written a thriller about an estranged daughter returning to a claustrophobic hometown to solve a cold case. It is giving absolute mid-tier Lifetime movie energy, no cap. Ghosts and Strip Malls The thematic core relies on the tired trope of the uncanny echoing across generations. But let us pivot entirely, because perhaps the marketing copy is just profoundly lazy. Allen clearly wants to evoke the atmospheric dread found in The Marsh King's Daughter or the stark isolation of Steph Cha’s work, yet the synopsis leans hard into melodrama. Desert mines. Foggy mountain switchbacks. It is a grab-bag of atmospheric clichés designed to hoodwink readers into mistaking scenic geography for actual tension. Raising the dead as a metaphor for unearthing trauma? Groundbreaking. Utterly revolutionary. The Hereditary Burden Cheyenne’s skepticism versus her maternal inheritance forms the supposed psychological backbone of this enterprise. Yet, the synopsis tells us practically nothing about who Cheyenne is outside of her grief. She is a vessel for exposition, a narrative construct designed to wander into abandoned mines while the publisher slaps a blurb from Kimi Cunningham Grant on the cover to manufacture unwarranted hype. We are expected to care about a protagonist whose defining characteristic is refusing to look away from a mirror she is already staring directly into. The heated seats in my SUV are malfunctioning again, which is a tragedy. #bookchat #thrillerreads #mysterybooks Related InsightsIt's Not What You Think Book Review and Summary Keeper of the Lost Cities Book Review and Summary How to Win Friends & Influence People Book Review and Summary{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [ { "@type": "Question", "name": "What is the main focus of Tell Me What You See Book Review and Summary?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Everything you need to know about Tell Me What You See with our detailed review." } }, { "@type": "Question", "name": "Who authored the comprehensive guide on Tell Me What You See Book Review and Summary?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "This detailed article and its insights were carefully researched and authored by Anna Kowalska." } }, { "@type": "Question", "name": "Where can I find more related content about Books?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "You can explore more articles, detailed reviews, and similar insights by browsing the Related Insights section at the bottom of this article or visiting our dedicated Books category page." } } ] }
