The coffee is stone cold, someone has smeared peanut butter across the stainless-steel toaster handle, and I am staring down Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Forgotten Melody while the hum of the refrigerator threatens to deafen me. Here’s the catch. The official synopsis reads like a word salad generated by a caffeinated marketing intern who just discovered the thesaurus function under the headings of political instability and generic peril. Prythian might never be the same again? Traditional alliances are crumbling? Please. It is the exact same breathless marketing speak plastered over every romantasy paper-weight currently clogging the bestseller lists next to Rebecca Yarros and Jennifer L. Armentrout. We get it. The stakes are high. The shadows are looming. The immortal fae are throwing temper tantrums while ancient evil lurks just off-screen, refusing to actually do anything until chapter fifty.

When the Dust Settles on the Dishwasher

The cultural obsession with ancient warlords who suddenly turn into soft-hearted domestic partners who do the dishes needs to be studied by sociologists, because I am watching my eight-year-old try to construct a functioning catapult out of dried fettuccine and a damp sponge right now and showing infinitely more innovation than these multi-perspective territorial disputes about dying stars and forgotten melodies.

Exhausting.

The Symphony of Shattered Alliances

Give me characters who communicate like functional adults instead of brooding behind suspiciously well-moisturized cheekbones while the world literally burns around them. The synopsis promises that bonds will be tested and power will shift, yet we all know this just means another three hundred pages of decorative agonizing before a deus ex machina saves the day and everyone goes back to drinking enchanted wine in their ridiculously oversized mountain mansions.

Unimaginative.

Stop screaming about the television volume. I have to go stop a full-scale geopolitical crisis over the living room remote right now.
